- W85673911 abstract "ABSTRACT In 2006, Mercedes-Benz introduced a spray-guided lean-burn stratified combustion system for gasoline engines in the M272 DE six-cylinder engine due to its exceptional fuel economy. To enable this combustion system, a new type of injector with outwardly opening needle was used, producing a stable, conical spray. The technology roll-out was continued in 2010 with the new V6 M 276 engine, featuring an enhanced lean-burn combustion process [3,4]. This combustion system has advantages mainly in part-load operation due to reduction of pumping losses and improved thermodynamic efficiency. With engine downsizing and turbocharging leading to higher specific output in the NEDC, Mercedes-Benz re-evaluated the efficiency benefits. It is shown, that downsizing with turbocharging and the lean burn stratified combustion combine ideally. Enhanced combustion concepts extend the working range of the lean burn mode to up to 90% of the NEDC even for small, turbocharged engines. Specific injection system requirements for this combustion system are also discussed. Particulate number limits under discussion for EU6 pose a challenge for gas DI engines. With the spray-guided process featuring a central injector with cone-shaped spray, thus low wall wetting and excellent mixture preparation, outstanding particle numbers were achieved.
