- W85773713 abstract "This chapter discusses current concepts regarding the role of vascular endothelium in acute inflammation. Particular attention is devoted to the contribution of endothelial cells to the modulation of (1) fluid and protein movement across the microvasculature and (2) leukocyte adherence and emigration in normal and inflamed vessels. These processes are addressed in an integrated fashion for three well-characterized models of acute gastrointestinal inflammation, that is, ischemia/ reperfusion-, ethanol-, and NSAID-induced inflammation. There is a growing body of evidence that implicates an acute inflammatory reaction as an integral component in the pathogenesis of mucosal injury in at least three experimental models of gastroenteropathy, that is, ischemia-reperfusion, ethanol, and NSAID. In the ischemia-reperfusion model, the vascular endothelium plays an important role by (1) increasing microvascular porosity via active alterations of its cytoskeleton and (2) participating in neutrophil adherence and emigration via the expression of adhesive glycoproteins on the endothelial cell surface. Although evidence is available to support a pivotal role for neutrophil–endothelial cell interactions in the pathogenesis of ethanol- and NSAID-induced mucosal injury, less information is available regarding the endothelial cell modulation of microvascular permeability." @default.
