- W85827392 abstract "Studies of the mechanisms of solute transport through the plasmalemma of plant cells is often hindered by the presence of the cell wall and other problems, such as cuticular, stomatal and free space resistances, encountered when working with complex tissues. Isolated protoplasts in theory represent a far simpler system than intact tissue which should allow studies of transport at the cellular rather than at the tissue level. Although isolated protoplasts from higher plant tissues and plant cell cultures have been used as experimental systems for many years, their general physiological state, especially in regard to their membrane transport properties, has only recently been investigated in any detail. Since membrane transport in protoplasts has not previously been reviewed, the aim of this report is to briefly assess our current knowledge of transport systems in protoplasts and to outline some of the problems which may be encountered in such studies. The existing methods used to study transport will also be discussed and a new transport assay for protoplasts described. Some preliminary results on the uptake of alkaloid drugs by protoplasts will also be presented." @default.
