- W85841508 abstract "Giangiorgio Trissino of Vicenza was born in 1478, within a decade of the publication of the first printed books in the Italian language.1 When the trickle of volumes that appeared in the seven ties of the fifteenth century became a flood in the first quarter of the sixteenth, writers were forced to think about their linguistic prac tice; obviously, if printing could be allied to a widely recognised literary language, Italian books would have a circulation which no one would have imagined to be possible in the days of manuscript. But, in an Italy which did not possess a common spoken tongue, which was the path to a suitable literary language? Should writers all over the peninsula model their writing on the great writers Italy had already produced, who were Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio (thus learning to write an elaboration of fourteenth-century Tuscan, or, more specifically, the Florentine variety of Tuscan)? Or should they, while admitting the superiority of Tuscan over other Italian dialects on account of the great literature it already possessed, reject archaizing (i.e. admit modern Tuscan usage as well)? Or should they seek more eclectic solutions (a lingua cor tigiana, a courtly language, perhaps, which could be based on the speech of cultivated people who gathered in court society, and par ticularly at the papal court at Rome, and whose language could be expected to have a broader base than Tuscan)? Not surprisingly, the sixteenth century witnessed one of the most vigorous periods of debate in the history of the much-abused, but in fact interesting and valuable, Questione della Lingua.2 Connected with this main dis cussion on the nature of the literary language there were other related arguments.
