- W86011024 abstract "This chapter highlights that wool from sheep is commercially the most important of the textile fibers obtained from animals. In order to understand the frictional behavior of wool and the type of treatments required to produce shrink resistance, it is necessary that certain aspects of the physical and chemical structure of the fiber are understood. That is discussed in the chapter. It discusses the mechanisms by which frictional properties cause felting shrinkage, followed by treatments used for imparting shrink resistance. The chapter presents the problems associated with the current commercial shrink-resist methods and discusses some of the directions that are being investigated for future industrial application. Wool from sheep has been used for the production of cloth for thousands of years. Despite the increasing use of synthetic fibers, it remains an important material used by the textile industry. Wool and other keratin fibers have evolved highly complex chemical and physical structures in order to maximize their primary function, which is to insulate the animal from heat and cold. Wool has a unique surface structure as it is the only textile fiber with a layer of overlapping scales on the surface." @default.
