- W8619291 abstract "As more and more genes are identified, efforts are redirected towards understanding the precise temporal and cellular control of gene expression. Expression measurements are a key step in this direction, and can be performed on a reasonably large scale using highly parallel hybridisation methods (Jordan 1998; Granjeaud et al. 1999; Supplement to Nature Genetics 1999). The method we describe here differs from others in two respects: the nature of the solid support (nylon) and the label used for complex probes (radioactive isotopes). Large-scale hybridisation techniques on nylon membranes to measure gene expression are presently available in two flavours: bacterial colonies or PGR products on high-density membranes, on the one hand, and microarrays of PGR products on the other. Microarrays are essentially a miniaturisation of the long-standing high-density membranes where overall dimensions and interelement spacing have typically been brought down five-to ten-fold. In both cases expression measurements are obtained after hybridisation with radioactive complex probes." @default.
