- W86213015 abstract "The long term future of much of this country's ecclesiastical carved stone which stands unprotected outdoors is uncertain in the face of a nunber of threats. Those responsible for its upkeep sometimes take opposing views about safeguarding it, and the public may be forgiven for believing that too little is being done. The purpose of this discussion is to review the present position and to encourage others to express their opinions on the best way forward. A case can be made?not just in Ireland, but globally?for safeguarding irreplaceable carvings like high crosses by putting them within a less exposed environment, and at least preserving what remains. The argument extends, of course, to metalwork as well as stone. In Venice, the four gilded bronze horses from the Basilica San Marco facade were eventually put in a museum to protect them from that city's aggresive industrial atmosphere, and copies set in their places. It is arguable that the preservation of stone crosses in Ireland, and specifically of early decorated crosses, can likewise be secured only by their removal to a place of shelter indoors. That the crosses were designed to stand in the open should not dictate policy: specimens in museums are, after all, divorced from their intended context." @default.
