- W863316296 abstract "Seven Secrets to a Joyful Birth: The Guide to Preparing Emotionally and Psychologically for Birth and Early Parenting Your Way by Dominique Sakoilsky (2012) Bristol, UK: SilverWood Books, 151 pages. ISBN:978-l-78132-006-8, EISBN: 978-1-78132-007-5.Birth educator and advocate of the unassisted childbirth movement Laura Kaplan Shanley, believes the current American contemporary birth model is a feminist, psychological, and spiritual catastrophe. As a UK-based birth educator and doula reading the obstetric statistics presented in her book, I am inclined to agree: Induction 40%, Analgesia 86%, IV 80%, Episiotomy 56%, and US women have a higher risk of dying of pregnancy-related complications than women in virtually all other industrialized countries. How, she asks, can any sentient self-respecting woman put herself through this?Dominique Sakoilsky's new book, Seven Secrets to a Joyful Birth has a gently persuasive perspective as she speaks clearly from her own empirical knowledge and experience. She authentically utilizes James Burgess' 7 Word System by initiating a simple questionnaire to focus the reader to an area of relationship in her life that requires greater attention to prepare for the baby's arrival (Burgess, 2012). Far from another well-intentioned book that seems to only undermine a new pregnant mother's sense of self, this book instead offers a refreshing perspective on getting ready for the upcoming birth.Through a conversational writing style, she explores these seven words of basic human interaction as the 'secrets' in chapters entitled, No, Hello, Thank you, Good bye, Please, Sorry and Yes. Each secret is further delineated with four key words that take the reader more deeply into the terrain in a genuine, occasionally prodding and deeply compassionate way, facilitating the reader to have access and authorship for needed change. Each chapter is also interspersed with sidebar concepts, suggestions, further topical questions to explore, relatable pregnancy and labor information or self-guided meditations that break up the density of Pre and Perinatal Psychology (PPN) into digestible pieces. The conclusion of each chapter ends with a narrative of one women's or couple's experience with one 'secret' and how the process highlighted an area for attention thus shifting and clarifying the birth journey towards a positive outcome. The second wave of birthing pioneers has emerged; having studied with the founders of the conscious birth movement whose groundbreaking work in the 70s and 80s has created a whole new academic, scientific and evolutional field. The difficulty has been how to take this vast world of Pre and Perinatal Psychology into a practical and effective way to our birthing families. So often the sheer volume of information is overwhelming and for many birthing families it can inspire guilt reactions, fear of doing the wrong thing, making a harmful decision or feeling paralyzed unable to make 'the right decision.'It is hard to shift our one dimensional decision-making processes from the cultural norm of studying an issue and making an informed decision based on externalized information and opinions from the experts to the internal exploration of how we feel, what resonates deeply within us, to explore the deeper longing or unmet need to foster greater self-knowledge and strengthen our confidence which then informs our decision. …" @default.
