- W86501026 abstract "This chapter presents the measurement of the stimulus. Photometry has been developed largely for practical purposes. In visual physiology photometry its methods can be used in reverse, as it were, to determine the spectral energy distribution of the light stimuli used in experiments. All measurements of light stimuli are based on comparison with calibrated sources of radiant energy. The chapter also presents stimulus at the retinal level. The aim of the stimulus measurement in visual physiology is to determine the absolute spectral energy distribution and the (mean) spatial distribution of the radiation reaching the various parts of the retina in any given experiment. The ultimate aim of the stimulus measurement is to determine the amounts of light absorbed by the photosensitive substances contained in the retinal receptors. As light absorption always occurs in discrete quantum processes each of which involves only one pigment molecule, it is best, at least in principle, to express the amounts of light absorbed by the receptors as (mean) numbers of quanta." @default.
