Gallagher has given us a witty, personal, poetic and helpful look into something that is close to her heart and her ministry. It is family. The tide of this small, but rich book implies that it is a theological study of family, and it is theology that concerns author, theology that emerges, as all good theology does, from real life. As she says in Introduction: is a of regular and constant redemption, and of renewed relationships healed after horrible frays in fabric of life. God's is meta-narrative of our story (viii). Life is portrayed in these pages in bold perspective: joy, and pain, of Gallagher's family of origin, competition with siblings, breaking away from home, marriage at a rather young age (and still very much married), motherhood, parenthood, ordination, coping with career and children. Gallagher writes clearly, weaving together biblical passages for themes, her own narrative, and many of her poems. In her introduction, Gallagher invites reader to hear her voice, that of a Native-American woman, and a wife, mother, grandmother, and bishop in Episcopal Church. She has a Ph.D., has taught in several seminaries, and is most interested in reflecting on personal and more relational aspects of life through theology.Throughout Family Theology, reader is invited into Gallagher's heritage, Cherokee tradition. Scripture is used throughout book. (I found only one thing annoying in that regard: using a passage from Hebrews, Gallagher refers to Pauline authorship of epistle.) The theological underpinning is, the work of God is not complete until a human being participates in creative drama. Finding intersections between stories in scripture and our present lives rather than reconstructing past is purpose of book (vii-ix). Everything fits well. The whole cloth is woven together from scripture, personal story, poetry, pertinent questions for study and discussion, and suggestions for group work. The book is neither heavy nor ponderous, but highly enjoyable and delightful, evoking emotions, particularly as Gallagher speaks endearingly of her parents. The back cover designates category for this book Christian education/Bible study, but I think it is a worthy addition to theology-as-story. The reverse could also be true-story-as-theology, and Gallagher makes that theme come alive, page after page.It is her poetry that I found most engaging and interesting as Gallagher spins out her stories and interpretations of biblical narratives.
