- W8667400 abstract "Endocytosis is a dynamic cellular process through which the vesicle-mediated uptake of macromolecules can occur. The internalization of extracellular material proceeds via two related pathways: pinocytosis of macromolecules in the bulk fluid phase and receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand bound to specific cell surface receptors which are internalized by endocytic vesicles. Functionally, endocytosis enables the cell to harvest key nutrient factors, including iron from transferrin, cholesterol from low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and vitamin B12. Furthermore, receptor-mediated endocytosis plays a vital role in the downregulation of receptors in response to target hormones. In fact, characterization of the major cellular events in receptor-mediated endocytosis has been afforded by examining the internalization of ligands recognized by receptors (for a recent review, see Smythe and Warren 1991).KeywordsEarly EndosomeLate EndosomeVesicle FusionEndosomal CompartmentCoated VesicleThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
