- W86737946 abstract "(ProQuest: ... denotes non-US-ASCII text omitted.)I sit down on a sofa in a comfortable corner of room and switch on a desk lamp. 1 begin reading. On 1 March, I wrote in my notebook: Africa Congo Kinshasa. Before I arrive there they will be part of my imagination only. Even if I see reality, my imagination may probably not stop. However, relationship may not necessarily be limited to imagination, meaning that we must dig something out from it. But what is foundation for one to dig in then? Our limited knowledge? Or politicalities hijacked by all sorts of interests? Or mutual feelings that are waiting to be developed? All these that are unknown keep one itching to give a go.The next day I set out on my journey to Kinshasa. What followed is what matters and things I encountered there.THE MILITARY HELMETThis is version of story that I know. In late 180Os, King Leopold II of Belgium seductively forced tribal leaders in Zaire River Base to accept a series of treaties of enslavement with result that Congo (Kinshasa) became his own private possession, eventually Belgium's colony. At end of 1950s, in die context of global national independent movements, people of Congo (Kinshasa), led by Lumumba, gained independence in 1960. In that year of independence, West invaded, followed by a number of civil wars. Lumumba was murdered by Belgium authorities. It was not till early 1990s that Congo (Kinshasa), ruled for decades by military and political strongman Mobutu, changed its name to Zaire. After fall of Mobutu, name was changed to Democratic Republic of Congo in 1997.Although I know that dusky empire has returned to dust.Disappearing from palm of my handLeaving me standing, bewildered, but not wearyMy exhaustion surprising myself, my feet branded withmarksI won't be meeting anyoneIt won't do to dream on an ancient, empty street, too deadquiet-Mr. Tambourine Man, Bob Dylan*Politically and economically, China has been greatly supportive of African countries that have been striving for national independence. And it is also mainly with support of these African countries that China was able to return to United Nations, an international political stage. In 1980s, in outskirts 30 kilometers from capital of Kinshasa, China built a palace for Mobutu in style of Manchu royalty that locals called the Chinese Pagoda. When our local friends and Paul, a Belgian, took us there, once magnificent residence had fallen into disuse, a place uncared for. The glazed roof tiles, fake mountain stones, and richly decorated beams and pillars were still there, but there was no one and pagoda remained empty, full of graffiti, rank with weeds that stank with urine. The mountains and rivers in paintings as well as royal mountains and waters here had been much weathered. Guided by a group of local kids, who seemed to have emerged from nowhere, we climbed to top of tower with staircase lying in complete ruins and watched Congo River and range of mountains in distance. In a corner, I found a military helmet, buckle on inside worn down. Soldiers must have stationed here before. I brought helmet back and asked my Congo artist friends, Alain Polo and Freddy Tsimbg, and writer Bibish Mumbu, to add something to it as a memento. As a sculptor, Freddy turned this helmet into a site of historical issues, a weighty artwork, with a knife and a fork as well as bullet shells from war that he would often use in his own works.Eating, drinking and warring, these were and are problems thereKnives, forks and guns, tableware and weaponry, similarphysically and spirituallySmart teeth and tongues, rude declarations of wars, weneed helpThey got entangled, wrestling, bending, or thrusting towards throatsEven around room tables with neat tablecloths fullsmiles elegant words soft actions and low lightsKnives and forks, suggestive that killings, for moment, won't stopA global problemLater on, we took helmet with us, on Kinshasa's streets, and, when I subsequently went in and out of airports artwork I carried with me became a troublesome and dangerous thing. …" @default.
