- W867979189 abstract "Solimar Otero. Afro-Cuban Diasporas in the Atlantic World. Rochester: U of Rochester P, 2010. 247 ppAfro-Cuban Diasporas in the Atlantic World, by Solimar Otero, seeks to examine the transnational and bidirectional flow of culture and people between Nigeria and Cuba in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Perhaps little known outside of Diaspora circles is the fact that black Cubans, often manumitted slaves or children of slaves, returned to Lagos and introduced elements of Cuban culture to their Nigerian homeland. Otero sets out to introduce these case studies of nineteenth-century repatriates, as well as to examine their legacy through interviews with members of their extended families. book also studies the role of African-particularly Lucumi, Palo Mayombe, and Yoruba-cultures in the development of a criollo, national Cuban culture. central argument of the book is heavily indebted to Otero's mentor, J. Lorand Matory, whose Black Atlantic Religion: Tradition, Transnationalism, and Matriarchy in Afro-Brazilian Candomble was seminal in introducing a fluid, multidirectional model to Diaspora studies. The influence of Matory is evident, if not sufficiently acknowledged, in Otero's work, for she similarly applies Benedict Anderson's theory of an imagined community to connect the stories and cultural practices of Lagosian and AfroCuban subjects. Otero's originality can be found in her addition of a folklore methodology to the anthropological design of Matory's project. Drawing from her training as a folklorist, she describes the Lagos-Cuban migrations with an allegory found in a Yoruba proverb that translates as The world is a marketplace; heaven is home. author establishes a connection between this religious cosmovision-which suggests that on earth will necessarily be transitory, will depend on bargaining and exchange, and will require wit and flexibility-and the negotiation of culture on both sides of the Atlantic. For example, flexibility and persistence made possible a Cuban syncretism in which Catholicism veiled traditional African Orisha worship. Similarly, the inclusiveness of Nigerians allowed for dual, non-contradictory practice of Yoruba and Catholic beliefs. Through this simultaneous practice of two or more religions, returnees to Lagos both engaged with local culture while demonstrating markers of (Eurocentric) prestige, a practice that facilitated social mobility. While the folklore methodology of Afro-Cuban Diasporas in the Atlantic World requires an interdisciplinary endeavor, necessarily combining literature, historical documents, and oral interviews, the study of the poetics of everyday life that is the basis of this field is not sufficiently developed. In attempting to focus on quotidian experiences, Otero identifies and frequently comments on what she calls sensibilities. This vague term is quite analogous to Antonio Benitez Rojo's use of the term de cierta manera to describe the intangible elements of Afro-Cuban culture. Otero's buzzword, however, initially refers to an Affo-Atlantic cyclical culture, in particular the creative use of the notions of heaven and home as a source of cultural understanding between dispersed groups of people. She does not examine or detail the appearance of these two tropes in folklore or other discursive frameworks, rather she uses the Yoruba proverb as a starting point from which she develops her argument of both a Caribbean resourcefulness and an African cultural inclusiveness. The book is divided into logical albeit disconnected parts that analyze cultures on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as a theoretical introduction designed to explain the complex folkloric approach. first part of the text provides individual histories of various repatriates traveling from Havana to Nigeria in the nineteenth century. Otero proposes to examine the relationship between the role of memory and the formation of a social imagination that fostered diasporic identities, but the case studies included fail to provide enough material with which to trace the processes of this imagination. …" @default.
