- W86892664 abstract "Mechanical operations are responsible for the translocation of large quantities of soil. Both usual tillage practices (deep ploughing and disking) and land levelling cause great modifications to the landscape in hilly agricultural areas; the main consequences are the truncation of the soil profile, where soil is cut by bulldozers or by tillage implements, and burial where earth material is accumulated. Other related consequences are the alteration of soil water dynamics and a general increase in soil vulnerability. Evidence of tillage erosion is frequent along field borders or in the presence of trees and electricity and telegraph poles along hillslopes. Land levelling for orchard and vineyard plantations is a common practice, especially in hilly areas of South Europe, the aim being to obtain wider and more uniformly shaped fields. Due to the season in which these mechanical operations are carried out (summer and autumn), which coincides with the most erosive rainfall, such practices can bring soil erosion to very high values. The extension of the area affected by mechanical erosion is relatively high in Tuscany (Italy), where even badlands are “reclaimed” using bulldozers. Using these erosion/deposition forms it is possible to assess the degree of soil translocation. In particular conditions, translocation rates can also be derived. A field assessment method is described herein and applied to some areas of Tuscany. Some examples of tillage erosion are presented and the possible consequences on land quality are discussed." @default.
