- W87288001 abstract "In this chapter, the nature of stream invertebrate communities in the South Island, New Zealand is considered in relation to concepts of disturbance and stability. Disturbance is widely regarded as a primary organizing factor in physically “harsh” stream environments, but the definition of what constitutes a disturbance is not always clear. Both environmental and faunal stability can also be difficult to define and measure, and are influenced by the spatial and temporal scales of interest, and historical factors. To illustrate the relationships between stability of stream faunas and the role of disturbance as a regulatory force, four case studies are presented. Two studies consider the persistence and resilience of invertebrate faunas in streams of contrasting and similar physical stability and flow variability. The other two studies examine faunal responses to catchment-scale disturbances (logging and the development of land for forestry) and the temporal stability of stream faunas following afforestation with exotic conifers. These and other studies indicate that the faunas of many South Island mountain streams are dominated by the same widely distributed species characterized by life history flexibility, lack of habitat specificity, and strong colonizing abilities. They also tend to exhibit a high degree of stability in species composition over time despite many streams having physically unstable beds, variable and unpredictable discharge patterns, and changing vegetational settings. It is hypothesized that the resilience of New Zealand mountain stream faunas, and the lack of strong habitat specialization of many species, can be explained in terms of their evolutionary history in changeable environments." @default.
