- W873181 abstract "Molecular imaging provides unique means for detecting and quantifying biological processes in intact subjects. Started as a novel, emerging field only a decade ago, vascular molecular imaging is now at the footsteps of clinical practice and promises to drastically alter practice paradigms. Through detection of molecular and cellular processes involved in the pathogenesis of atherogenesis and other vascular diseases, molecular imaging can allow for early diagnosis and risk stratification based on objective assessment of dynamic biological processes occurring in a given individual. As a research tool, molecular imaging allows for longitudinal studies in the same subject and reduces the number of subjects needed in a given study to obtain interpretable data. By providing surrogate biological measures, molecular imaging may advance drug development and reduce the time required for evaluation of new drugs. In this chapter, we outline experimental imaging technologies and discuss the strengths and weaknesses associated with existent imaging platforms. We further describe molecular imaging approaches that involve detection of pathways associated with vascular diseases, including inflammation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and angiogenesis. We then review a number of clinical studies that involve molecular imaging for evaluation of atherosclerosis in specific patient populations. Much of the exciting potential of vascular molecular imaging has at least partially materialized and novel advances promise to expand its applications in vascular biology research and cardiovascular medicine." @default.
