- W87367499 abstract "This chapter discusses the findings of a blood–gas analysis in the unstressed human fetus at 17–-22 weeks of gestation. The current assessment of fetal well-being during the antenatal period in the human has relied upon the observations of fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns, fetal limb and chest wall movements, the ultrasound measurements of the fetal anatomy and liquor volume, and the quantitation of various hormones and biochemical constituents in maternal blood and urine. Access to the fetal circulation might provide a direct, precise assessment of the fetal state, relating both to its acute condition and chronic compromise in the way that scalp blood sampling has been utilized during the intrapartum period. Whether the early second trimester fetus has higher O2 and lower CO2 levels than at term is not certain. Nonetheless, some of the high venous levels of O2 found especially after O2 administration raise questions as to the physiological mechanisms involved as well as the possible effects of fetal hyperoxia. There are many factors involved in oxygen delivery to, and CO2 removal from, the fetus. The question remains as to whether the higher O2 and lower CO2 values in both fetal vein and artery found at fetoscopy at 17–22 weeks reflect a genuine physiological difference between early and late gestation or simply a more normal physiological state than is found at term elective Caesarean section." @default.
