- W8749802 abstract "This chapter presents the historical background, properties, pathogenesis, epizootiology, techniques for identification, handling, control, and prevention of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV). It also discusses the properties, pathogenesis, control, and prevention of the mouse thymic virus. Like other herpesviruses, the MCMV virion is composed of a double-layered envelope derived from the nuclear membrane, enclosing a capsid composed of 162 capsomers arranged in icosahedral symmetry. A peculiar characteristic of MCMV morphology in cell culture is the occurrence of multicapsid virions, that is, envelopes containing anywhere from two to more than 20 campsites. This phenomenon has not yet been reported for other herpesviruses, but it has been suggested that it may be related to the occurrence of so-called dense bodies seen in human CMV-infected cultures. At present, no pragmatic need exists for active MCMV prevention. However, several studies have employed vaccines derived from MCMV as possible model systems for the assessment of vaccine approaches to human CMV. The mouse thymic virus has not caused any lethal disease in any mouse strain tested. When inoculated intraperitoneally, it causes a macroscopic disease solely in the thymus, and that occurs only if the mice are less than 10 days of age at inoculation. The mouse thymic agent is fairly widespread in nature and in breeder colonies of mice. It is likely to represent a significant source of contamination of MCMV pools as both viruses cause chronic, productive salivary gland infection and can readily coinfect the same host. Additional detailed information about mouse thymic vims, including means of prevention and control, awaits improved techniques for its study." @default.
