It has been almost 14 years since Grayson.sup.1 commented on the meager impact management science principles have had on management practitioners and proposed ways to close the gulf In the field of marketing, it has been 26 years since Levitt's.sup.2 classic article Marketing Myopia, which discussed management's lack of emphasis on the basic marketing concept. Although the concept is highly valued in big business, perhaps to the point of misuse,sup.3 it is not clear that the concept has filtered down to smaller businesses. An AMA Education Division study concluded that innovations, particularly as perceived by academicians, never reach line management, mostly due to researcher/manager cultural barriers..sup.4 If, as previous researchers have indicated, knowledge of strategic management of small and growing firms is inadequate,.sup.5 it would appear that our understanding of how small business managers make decisions is incomplete, despite the considerable research in the areas of entrepreneurial characteristics and managerial roles. The purpose of this article is to explore small business managers' receptivity to strategic planning, market research, financial analysis, and quantitative decision systems. The research reported here also attempted to investigate the perceived importance of major functional areas along with the cognitive characteristics of managers. LITERATURE REVIEW Many studies have documented the lack of business planning, especially strategic planning, in smaller firms.sup.6 Other studies have documented the lack of managers' familiarity with probability decision making and operations management techniques, but found relatively sophisticated use of investment analysis among smaller firms.sup.7 Some studies have cited short-term problems and short-term orientations as causes for the lack of planning..sup.8 Studies that examine managerial roles can increase understanding of the environment in which planning takes place. For example, researchers have noted that sales people tend to emphasize interpersonal roles; accountants and other staff functions emphasize information roles; and production managers emphasize leadership roles. General managers, despite different functional backgrounds, tend to share very similar role emphasis.sup.9 Other studies, however, have suggested that managers who are promoted tend to emphasize working behaviors closely related to their former positions.sup.10 Still other studies suggest that functional background affects the implementation of business strategies and risk-taking. Slocum and Hellriegel characterized manager's information gathering and processing styles as sensory vs. intuitive and thinker vs. feeler. These style classifications can aid in the understanding of managers' receptivity to planning, since they affect planning time frames, degree of comfort with theory, preference for type of information gathering, and analytical abilities. …" @default.
