- W87610905 abstract "Fluorescence methods are increasingly applied for the characterization of polymeric materials. In the present chapter, a number of applications of fluorescence spectroscopy are presented in an effort to illustrate the potential of this technique to study structure and properties of polymeric materials. In analytical chemistry fluorescence, methods to date are widely applied to determine trace constituents in environmental and bioanalysis. The technique can be applied to the determination of autofluorescent compounds, or—since fluorescence, by no means, is a universal phenomenon—nonfluorescent compounds may be measured by making use of suitable fluorescent labels. Because fluorescence emission involves the measurement of light against a dark background, and is not based on difference measurements like most absorption techniques, detection may be achieved on a very low level. Recently, even fluorescent measurements of single molecules are reported which are covered in this chapter. By application of fluorescent labels even more areas of research come within reach. In situ morphological characteristics of polymers as such and polymers in interaction with solvents or undergoing some sort of physical or chemical action may be studied." @default.
