- W876976352 abstract "The Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch, known as 2 Baruch, has had an important role for well over a century in discussions of the nature of Judaism after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE. This role depends inevitably on the current broad consensus that 2 Baruch was composed in the period just after the disaster. The Syriac apocalypse of Baruch came to the attention of scholars of ancient Judaism only in the mid-nineteenth century, when Antonio Maria Ceriani found a version of the text in a biblical manuscript of the sixth or seventh century in the Ambrosian Library in Milan. Throughout the period of the Second Temple, the destruction of the building where God was worshipped must have been all too possible for Jews to imagine precisely because it had happened once already.
