- W877164611 abstract "Friedrich, Wolfgang-Uwe, ed. Germany and America. Essays in Honor of Gerald R. Kleinfeld. New York, Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2001. 324 pp. $39.95 hardcover. With all of the limitations of a Festschrift, I am pleased with the successful use of the nineteen contributions in this collection, written in German (eight) and English (eleven), dealing with the contemporary history (Zeitgeschichte) of Germany since WW II and, secondarily, its relation to the United States. I have twice assigned this book as a supplemental text in teaching a general education course, Modern German Culture and Civilization at my home institution. discrepancy of the vast majority of contributors to this collection being political scientists or historians (sixteen of nineteen), whereas the vast majority of faculty in German Studies Departments in this country being cultural studies or language and literature specialists, is beyond the purview of this brief review. Suffice it to say, this fact does not detract from this book as a useful teaching and research tool in German Studies. There are other significant links between these articles and curricular considerations. One of the curricular innovations during the last thirty years in German Studies -part of the shift away from a concentration on language and literary studies, are courses in Wirtschaftsdeutsch or Business German. I am of course aware of the current backlash against the scepter of economic neo-liberalism. However, the implications of Germany being either number one, two or three along with the United States and Japan as the world's leading trading nation has not been fully grasped by many German Studies specialists. For one thing, achieving top ranking in international trade and direct investments cannot come about without state of the art in science, technology, and engineering. Addressing the issue of U.S.-EU trade disputes in his article, Of Bananas and Beef, Michael Huelshoff reminds us: The issues at stake are enormous.... By 1996, the EU was once again the United States' most important business partner, replacing the East Asian economies. This article is all the more useful because of the dearth of articles and books by specialists of international trade and finance making the highly complex issues involved accessible to non-specialists. Another important aspect of this collection is as a corrective to certain popularly held views regarding recent European history. For example, Americanization in reference to post-WWII Germany goes far beyond the enthusiastic adoption of American popular culture, Hollywood movies, chewing gum and blue jeans. …" @default.
