- W88134617 abstract "Active surveillance is a reasonable approach to aggressive therapy for men with specific clinical profiles. However, the psychosocial burden of active surveillance is both substantial and largely unexplored. The studies reviewed within this chapter indicate that men undergoing active surveillance may have a psychosocial response to prostate cancer that is compounded by anxiety and uncertainty in living with cancer over a period of time. Several studies have demonstrated the impact of active surveillance on the patient and the subsequent impact on quality of life. Despite the great psychosocial burden of active surveillance, few interventions could be found specifically focusing on support for this population. The research on effectiveness of support groups has been inconclusive and not always representative of the prostate cancer population. Moreover, it is suggested that men in prostate cancer support groups may feel some pressure to undergo treatment. Self-management interventions for men undergoing active surveillance are a newer and potentially helpful way in which men may manage the psychosocial disease burden in a population that needs to “do something.” More research is needed on the role of support groups and disease self-management. The psychosocial disease burden of men with prostate cancer undergoing active surveillance must be acknowledged and addressed in future research studies and clinical practice.KeywordsProstate CancerActive SurveillanceProstate Cancer PatientLocalize Prostate CancerWatchful WaitingThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
