- W882891890 abstract "Paradoxes of History and Memory in Post-Colonial Sierra Leone. Edited by Sylvia Ojukutu-Macauley and Ismail Rashid. Plymouth UK: Lexington Books, 2013. Pp. 323. $100.00.The process of retelling the history of a nation can be a most daunting task especially so when the knowledge and memory of that past constitute fragmented experiences that are not only shaped by critical and controversial periods as enslavement, colonialism, and the struggle for independence, but also hinge on the interpretation of these experiences through western paradigms and discourses that reflect binaries of self and other, primitive and civilized, and the periphery and the center. Accordingly, and as several of the chapters in this book clearly indicate, the discourse adopted in the production of historical knowledge about Sierra Leone had for the most part largely focused on notions of exclusion and inclusion that highlight the cultural and political hegemony of western colonialists undeniably couched in racial constructs and contestable critical formations of history. This collection of essays, showcasing the works of very accomplished and prominent scholars of Sierra Leone's history at home and abroad, seeks to reconfigure the western paradigms of engagement and interpretation of historical knowledge about Sierra Leone and re-center the conversation to include and reflect indigenous perspectives of the nation's past through exploring social constructs such as class, gender, identity formation, nation building, resistance, and social conflict. The writers' examination of the significance of these issues in recalibrating western notions of history and its sociocultural context illustrates the various paradoxes and transformative moments in Sierra Leone and West Africa. The chapters in this collection of essays are contextualized within the backdrop of larger historical narratives of over 200 years that depict such crucial historical landmarks in Sierra Leone's history as the creation of the Province of Freedom, the establishment of the British Settlement in 1808, the upsurge of nationalist movements and transcontinental pan-Africanism, and the declaration of independence in 1961. They brilliantly capture the various thematic and conceptual shifts in the retelling of history and illustrate the paradoxes of memory in the reconstruction of historical narratives.Rashid and Ojukutu-Macauley are at their best in exposing the gaps and omissions in the foundational and subsequent scholarship on the history of Sierra Leone. In their view, this notion of exclusivist bias is indicative of the extent to which the subaltern, peasants, workers, and women, are silenced and exploited. …" @default.
