Its plot was simple: failing to win social acceptance for their relationship, the novel's heroes, an enlightened Jewess and her Polish lover, commit suicide. The controversy which the novel generated in Warsaw literary circles was due to its advo cacy of mixed marriages as a means of integrating assimilated Jews into Pol ish society.2 Przyborowski, who subsequently dismissed this social message as a youthful concession to the literary fashion of the time, was certainly correct in stressing that the novel's subject, style and radically pro emancipatory spirit were characteristic products of the first post-insurrec tionary decade.
