- W88348718 abstract "The following paper sets out to examine the lexicon as a variable of a text's readability level. It tries to find the criteria that rules the lexical decisions of the speaker when he's producing the adequate text with the intention of being undestood by a particular listener. According to our hypotheses the native speakers have some kind of sociorhetorical and metalinguistic pragmatic competence that allows them to infer the mental lexicon of their linguistic community members. To make these inferences they follow criteria based on a motivated convention. In consequence the speakers will make similar judgements about the cognitive effort that the lexical items require on different age listeners. Thirty judges were asked to analyse the TEVI Vocabulary Test (Echeverria, Herrera, Vega, 1993) and to correlate each lexical item with the different age stages. They also had to explicit the criteria used. As it was found that the data showed very little variability, the hypothesis was confirmed." @default.
