- W88409770 abstract "Limitations of Gutmann's parental imperative (Chapter 10, this volume) are discussed in this paper. Although Gutmann is concerned with the impact of changing sex roles upon species survival, it could be argued that these same changes are essential for survival and are occurring out of necessity. The task then becomes recognition of the unique contribution that each person can make, irrespective of expected sex roles. Gutmann also regards the parental imperative as an important focus for explaining adult development. However, the parental imperative is only one of many important influences on the adult. Others might include career development and acquisition of property and stature. All of these theorectical explanations, however, remain to be tested by researchers; until then, Gutmann's model of the parental imperative provides a useful focal point." @default.
