- W88506514 abstract "This chapter discusses the EGTA-induced dissipation of a potassium diffusion potential and the EGTA-induced 22Na efflux in the absence of a membrane potential with either sodium or Tris ions outside the vesicles. It is clear that the two processes are significantly inhibited in the presence of Tris as the only external monovalent cation. The pre-incubation of the vesicles in the presence of vanadate and EGTA. The inhibition by vanadate of the EGTA-induced potassium (sodium) efflux requires the same conditions that have been shown to block the Ca-ATPase in its calcium free conformation, that is, exclusively when both EGTA and vanadate are present in the incubation medium. This suggests that the monovalent cation carrier is the ATPase itself. Ca-ATPase is able to catalyse a monovalent cation (Na, K) exchange in the absence of ATP. This exchange occurs during the E ⇆ E* transconformation, calcium ions and vanadate inhibiting the exchange by stabilizing the E and E* state, respectively." @default.
