While presenting community bankers with perspective has always been the goal of this survey report, in working with our banker advisory panel, we attempted to take some things one step further. A few examples will illustrate: * Human Resources: We've asked in the past about how the state of the lob market affected bank recruitment. But this time, we asked specifically about 11 different job categories. And what we learned will surprise you. * Service Quality: Harry Radix, one of our advisory committee bankers, early on said he wanted more than anything else to know about other bankers' efforts with mystery shoppers. These undercover customers, if you will, visit banks to give them an independent perspective on their service. This banker's interest led to an entire new section regarding service quality. * Income Picture: Once again, we asked bankers about their product offerings and their plans on future additions to their products and services. But this time we added a new wrinkle: We asked those offering the product if the product represented a significant source of revenue--and what we learned may affect where you take your bank in the future. About the Survey and the Sample This is the seventh Community Bank Competitiveness Survey conducted by ABA Banking Journal and the ABA Community Bankers Council. The survey's purpose is to establish rolling benchmarks regarding community banks' ability to maintain their edge, while also exploring new ground as issues dictate. In early September, 5,474 top management subscribers, mostly from banks under $1 billion in assets, were mailed a four-page questionnaire--760 usable and unique responses were received. These came from 49 states as well as Washington, D.C., and represented a 14% response rate. The average asset size of the sampled banks came to $178.8 million. Results were analyzed across the entire sample, as well as across other breakouts. Among these were three asset-size categories: Under $100 million in assets (372 banks); between $101-$200 million (191); and over $201 million (197). Results were also analyzed by regions, using the same state breakdown that FDIC uses for its reports. Below are other data concerning the sample.
