- W88763458 abstract "A Tripod Tower Platform (TTP) is one of the design concepts being studied by A/S Norske Shell for the development of the TROLL-West gas field, Block 31/2, offshore Norway, where the waterdepth is 340 metres. The design of such a fixed steel type of platform for this particular application involves the use of heavy wall tubulars for the centre column and the supporting legs, i.e. with material thickness of 125 and 180 mm respectively, to be fabricated from a low yield strength steel (minimum yield strength 250 N/mm2). In view of the large quantity of welding involved, a provisional material specification was designed with special emphasis on good weldability. This paper describes some of the test results obtained on the material and the narrow gap submerged arc welded joints in 200 mm thick steel specially manufactured according to this material specification. It is concluded that preheating during fabrication can be limited to 50–60°C and that post weld heat treatment can be omitted in the case of the longitudinal and circumferential narrow gap submerged arc welded joints in the heavy wall tubulars because of the good overall fracture behaviour of these welded joints in conjunction with the simple geometrical configuration of this welds and the loading conditions in these structural components. The results obtained on 125 mm thick material which has been manual metal arc and flux cored arc welded will be published in due course." @default.
