- W88914752 abstract "This chapter addresses the benefits and need for school-community-nature-social connections, among countries, to help overcome serious nature-connection problems. It uses the Our Shared Forests case study to make these points. The Our Shared Forests program emphasizes ten birds “shared” between the southeastern USA and Ecuador. Learners in North and South America discover integrated social and environmental issues that affect these birds as they nest, feed, and live within forest habitats in two hemispheres. This chapter also examines the impact of service learning for global relationships. Students learn that shade-grown coffee and cacao production improve bird habitat in South America and participate in fundraising activities with fair-trade coffee. The idea of exchanging photographs and data about bird species with citizens in another country cannot be understated and is effective for enhancing learner understandings of place value within a larger global economy, community, and roles as citizens of planet Earth. The author envisions how students and informed environmental stewards might work with policy makers to recognize the value of education for global citizenship, for the continued well-being of our planet and health of the next seven generations." @default.
