Deutsche harmonia mundi 82876 58705 2. $9.48 Rating: ????Mozart's Requiem occupies a unique place in music history. As director John Butt writes in his liner notes, While some of its popularity can be attributed to romantic notions of the dying genius doing his utmost to crown his life's work in the most sublime fashion, there is no doubt that the vast proportion of the surviving material is remarkable in its musical cohesion and emotional (p. 5). Indeed, that cohesion and power are displayed with brilliance on both these recordings, one performed from a new modern edition by Franz Beyer, the other based on David Black's new scholarly edition of the first completed version prepared in 1792 by Franz Xaver Susmaycr (1766-1803). Butt points out that Susmayer's version has been criticized for weaknesses in the Sanctus and Osanna, as well as its orchestration and part-writing. Those critiques, however, opened up the field to composers and creative scholars who wished to do better in their imagining of the ideal Mozartian completion. The most devout Mozartians, on the other hand, do not believe the work should be performed beyond the point of Mozart's last original notations, though they do sanction performance of completions of the work to that point.Given the complexity of the requiem's genesis and the involvement of several hands after the composer's death, it is a pleasure to be able to compare this performance of this new reconstruction of Mozart-Susmayer s original with a new modern edition. To my ears, it greatly adds to the pleasure that both recordings were made with orchestras performing on original instruments and with eighteenth-century performance practice traditions in mind. (Examples below.) For some listeners, the distinctions between the two editions of the mass will be insignificant-or at least will pale in comparison to the many differences between the two recordings. Chief among these are tempos, the role of the conductors, sound qualities and ideals of the soloists and choruses, and conceptual differences between how the movements should depict their dark affects. If you are used to the requiem performed by a modem orchestra with modern legato performance style, you will be taken aback by the ferocity of some of the movements, which-in hindsight comparisons-will make some modern performances appear to be mere shadows of the real thing. …" @default.
