- W890452458 abstract "SUMMARY I. A survey of the literature subsequent to M. Noth's überlieferungsgeschichtliche Studien shows that his understanding of I Samuel 12 as being a wholly deuteronomistic chapter, containing Samuel's farewell address to Israel, has gradually been abandoned. On the one hand, the chapter appeared to be intimately related to the formulary of a covenant ratification (Muilenburg, Baltzer). On the other, it does more than simply conclude the Samuel cycle. At the same time it has the judge set himself a new prophetic task: as teacher and intercessor he impresses upon the people and the king how they ought to live in peace with God (Weiser, Buber). Both insights lead one to assume that the kernel of the chapter preserves an old Gilgal tradition (Stoebe). Even if the entirely deuteronomistic character of the chapter is maintained, it is somehow composed of two major themes: social justice within Israël and protection against its enemies from without (Boecker).II. On the grounds of these preceding studies and some further observations the following explanation is proposed: A. Vss. 1–5 constitute the closing of Ch. 11, more particularly of the Gilgal scene (vss,14f). At his farewell, Samuel receives the evidence of having blamelessly performed his judicial duties. The interest is mainly biographical. The author represents the literary phase in which various stories about the beginning of the Israelite kingship were integrated into the Samuel cycle. B. Vss. 6–25, while concluding the preceding complex of Ch. 8–11, likewise open the new era of the monarchy by raising the question whether or not Israel can go on being the people of God, now that they have chosen to be ruled by a king. The answer is positive, provided that both the people and the king faithfully serve God in agreement with Samuel's instructions and protected by his intercession. Thus, the last judge is inaugurated as the first prophet.III. Arguments adduced in support of A: 1. The form address ‘Israel’, a theme of major importance in Ch.11, is being continued only in vss.1–5. 2. Samuel's farewell and the accession of the king are juxtaposed.IV. Arguments adduced in support of B: 1. Vss.6–25 exhibit several tensions: with Ch. 11 regarding the inter pretation of Nahash's attack, with 12: 1–5 regarding the interpretation of the institution of the monarchy. 2. Samuel's interlocutor is called here ‘the people’ in a convenantal meaning, evidently at variance with the military meaning of the same term in Ch. 11. 3. The division into periods of the history of Israel as the people of God serves the aim of having Samuel lay the constitution for the new era of the monarchy. This theme appears to be a late deuterono- mistic concern.V. Excursus: several traits of Samuel, as sketched in vss.6–25, remind us of Moses, perhaps in order to underline his opening a new era." @default.
