- W89070382 abstract "Interest in consanguinity has arisen from attempts to measure the randomness of mating in human populations and thereby to predict rates of gene frequency change. Obviously, in no human population is mating random in the classical sense: the two gametes which form a new individual must be contributed by, two individuals of different sexes; the parents are usually of approximately the same age and may have other traits in common; monogamy is practiced in most populations; and degree of relatedness is generally a factor in the choice of mates. Close consanguinitv is usually prohibited, but marriage between more distant relatives may even be encouraged (Schull and Neel 1965). Under these circumstances, it is not readily apparent what the effect of demographic and socioeconomic structure will be on the frequencies of various types of consanguineous marriages and on the rate of accumulation of inbreeding. Moreover, in most small populations, there are too few consanguineous marriages to permit an accurate determination of their frequency and too little time depth to detect a significant increase in consanguinity. We have therefore chosen to approach these problems by using a computer model of a small human population, analyzing consanguinity in the artificial populations generated by the computer and making comparisons with the actual population and, where possible, with the predictions of theoretical models." @default.
