- W891870492 abstract "Human Ecology students experience a professional career, public service, and studies through the Urban Semester Program in New York City. Most finish the term with a new perception of people, places - and themselves. Jean Hong, a nutritional sciences major from Houston, wanted to see a clinical nutritionist at work in a place that was exotic to her for its size, pace, and variety of people. Instead of a European city, she chose ne just as far from what she'd known: New York City. In the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, school principal Sonia Gulardo has come to anticipate the help of Cornell students at Beginning with Children School. At this public school that is operated by a private foundation with corporate aid, in a place where many children need an extra push to even think about going to college, she looks forward to three weekly doses of enthusiasm and curiosity the Cornell students bring to the pupils in her school. Student and school linked up last spring through Cornell's Urban Semester Program, which is sponsored by the College of Human Ecology. As a program participant, Hong shadowed a clinical nutritionist at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center three days a week; another day she helped teachers at Beginning with Children School. Urban Semester Program provides about 30 students each semester with internships in their professional fields. students live in a residence hall at Cornell's Weill Medical College in Manhattan. Monday through Wednesday they work at their internships, sampling a professional career. Each Thursday they fulfill a public service commitment, spending the day working at urban locations with people who can use their help. academic dimension of this three-component program takes the form of three courses in multiculturalism taught by Sam Beck, the program's director since 1990. There also are winter break and summer versions of the program. Throughout the semester, Beck brings the students face to face with their own perceptions of places and notions of who people are. He pushes them to confront their ideas about people of different ages, ethnic backgrounds, educational levels, social classes - everything that the term multicultural implies. He does this through trips around the city, discussions about what students see on those trips, and having the students keep journals and write papers about their experiences as they probe what lies beneath the surface of people and neighborhoods. public service and professional components of the program are made possible by the program's urban partners. partners in public service include Beginning with Children Foundation/School, Nuestros Ninos Development Center, and El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice, all in Williamsburg; the East Harlem School at Exodus House, an independent school of 60 pupils who need more emphasis on study skills and discipline; Banana Kelly High School and Roosevelt High School in the South Bronx; and, starting this fall, Harvey Milk School, a high school in Greenwich Village for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning youth. program's workplace partners include Weill Medical College, several Wall Street firms, and the financial and management consulting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers. Students work in New York Hospital, often with Weill Medical College faculty and staff. Through all three levels of learning, every intense week, the Cornell students discover new depths to themselves. It is a rite of passage, to see the students transformed from older children to more adultlike people, breaking from a nurturing environment, Beck says. They're asked to take full responsibility for a load of work on which an organization depends. organizations take the students in, enfold them, challenge them to become a part of the operation. They do meaningful, real work for organizations. He adds, The hospital and medical college's staff and faculty have been very generous to the students. …" @default.
