- W89433299 abstract "Summary Serial blood Cu studies were carried out on about 370 ewes in Derbyshire, distributed over five farms, throughout the period of pregnancy, in connexion with a large scale field experiment on swayback in lambs. For the purpose of considering the effect of prophylactic treatment on blood Cu levels, the four groups in Part I of this report are reduced to two; those dosed orally with 0·5 g. of copper sulphate once a fortnight and those receiving no copper. The Cu status of the ewes in October was very low, the mean blood value being 0·051 mg.p.c. Two-thirds of the animals showed figures below 0·06 mg.p.c., with practically half below 0·04 mg.p.c. In the groups receiving no Cu the blood values had by January fallen even lower, 86 per cent. lying below 0·06 mg.p.c., and just before lambing in March the distribution was much the same. The Cu-treated groups showed slight improvement in January although 66 per cent. of the figures were still below 0·06 mg.p.c., but by March their values had markedly improved and only 39 per cent. lay below 0·06 mg.p.c. Cu treatment ceased after lambing in March, and by May the elevated values had fallen almost to the level of the controls. A supplementary blood sampling carried out on the largest farm in July showed that the previous differences between the groups had vanished. The improved Cu status of the treated ewes was reflected in the much lower incidence of swayback in the resulting lamb crop, as compared with ewes receiving no copper. In general those ewes which gave rise to swayback lambs had a much lower preparturient blood Cu level than those which produced normal lambs, although a low level in an individual mother did not necessarily imply the condition of swayback in her offspring. Derbyshire ewes with a low blood Cu status transferred to Weybridge and maintained on a basal ration of oats and oat straw very low in copper showed a rapid improvement in blood Cu levels and this was reflected in the absence of swayback amongst the offspring. It would seem that some factor in the natural pastures in Derbyshire, other than mere quantity of Cu, is responsible for the low blood Cu status in ewes grazing thereon, and is closely associated with the development of swayback in lambs." @default.
