- W89463649 abstract "The design of reprocessing plant should satisfy key requirements of safety, minimum environmental impact, and operability, as the indispensable matiers. The MFRP (Midwest Fuel Recovery Plant) uses a single cycle of solvent extraction to separate more than 99.9% of fission product radioactivity in an aqueous waste stream of moderate volume. Pu and Np are recovered by ion exchange for concentration and load-out in nitrate solution form. U is processed through denitrntion, fluorination and clean-up processes which remove contaminants and produce the UF/sub 6/ product without generating addltional liquid waste. There is no process liquid waste or coollng water dlscharged to the environment. Waste vaults and basins at MFRP are constructed of reinforced concrete set in bedrock, and equipped with stainless steel liners. Ventilation systems employ pressure, and all differential control, with personnel areas above atmospheric pressure, and all contaminated areas at less than atmospherc pressure (but above off-gas vent pressures in the cell areas). Emergency and safety-related systems are protected against wind, missile, and seismic forces. Owing to severe requirements for shielding, cooling, ease of handling and contamination control as well as safety criteria such as capability to withstand extreme accident conditions, it is concluded that GE has selected themore » IF 300 Cask principally intended for rail or barge shipment but capable of movement by overweight truck.
