- W89694429 abstract "Hamlet ... the rest is silence Presented by Theatre Company at the Rosslyn Spectrum, Arlington, Virginia. October 9-November 9, 2003. Adapted and Directed by Paata Tsikurishvili. Set and costumes by Georgi Alexi-Meskhishvili. Choreography by Irina Tsikurishvili. Lighting by Colin K. Bills. Music selected from works by Giya Kancheli. With Paata Tsikurishvili (Hamlet), Irina Tsikurishvili (Ophelia), Irakli Kavsadze (Claudius), Catherine Gasta (Gertrude), Armand Sindoni (Polonius, Gravedigger), Greg Marzullo (Laertes), Philip Fletcher (Horatio, Player), Jonathan Leveck (The Ghost, Player King, Jester), Irinia Koval (Gertrude), and others. Hamlet ... the rest is silence. Not quite. There are no words in Theater's interpretation of Hamlet but it is performed to the vivid music of Giya Kancheli, and the action indeed speaks at least as loud as words. This unique troupe hunched its first season independent of the Stanislavski Theater with a reprise of the 2002 production that garnered three Helen Hayes Awards. Synetic's hallmark is storytelling through movement. The principals, Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili are trained, respectively, in mime and classical dance. They bring an approach to theater that combines, in their words, synthesis, kinetics, synergy, ethics and cinema. Hence, their choice of the word Synetic to describe their corps. The story is condensed into twelve scenes that run ninety minutes. Despite the absence of words, this intensely physical production makes bold interpretive choices. The production takes place in a simple empty box, and all the characters are dressed in black except for the ghost, who wears white. In the opening scene, the set consists of a ladder with a skull sitting on it and a single hanging incandescent light. Dead bodies are all over the stage. Hamlet enters and looks through the rungs of the ladder. The ladders in later scenes, held by various characters, serve as doors. The lights fade, and as they come up again, the scene is now the court celebration of Claudius' coronation. Hamlet enters brooding upon the skull of his father. He places the skull on his shoulder as he moves among the courtiers. When Gertrude tries to engage him, he shows her the skull. Then he hands the skull to Claudius, who visibly shudders. Ophelia enters and broods with Hamlet. She wipes a tear from Hamlet's cheek; he in turn wipes a tear from the skull. The music becomes slow and haunting like the sound of howling wind. Hamlet blows into the skull to conjure up the Ghost. After his encounter with the Ghost, Hamlet no longer carries the skull around but the Ghost is an ever-present companion to his melancholy son--rather like Hamlet's alter ego or super ego. …" @default.
