- W897276281 abstract "This study examines the impact of mini-tests on accounting students ' performance. Using my intermediate accounting classes during four semesters, students were divided into three groups: (a) students had mini-tests before lecture, (b) students had them after lecture, or (c) no mini-tests. Mini-tests were counted for a large percentage or a low percentage of final grade. The results indicate that students' performance on mini-tests after lecture was much higher than their performance on mini-tests before lecture. In addition, giving a 40% of the final grade for mini-tests motivated students to study for the mini-tests. Overall, students' performance of the class had mini-tests was much higher than students' performance of the class had no mini-tests or had only 5% of final grade for mini-tests. Introduction Norman (1981) suggested that students' performance and skill could be improved through appropriate pedagogical techniques if the students are motivated. There must be an appropriate motivational or reward system that encourage students to do their works, and also enables the instructor to obtain feedback concerning the performance of students. Hence, quizzes can be used as a feedback system and can increase student performance if a grade for the quiz is a significant part of the total grade. Stout and Smeltz (1982) compared the use of quizzes to the conventional lecture-discussion teaching method and found that quizzes had a positive, but mild effect on test scores. Baldwin (1980) conducted a study for one semester, gave a group of students quizzes before lectures and discussions, and a control group of students quizzes after lectures and discussions. He concluded that giving quizzes before lectures and discussion results in more productive use of class time and improved learning. On the other hand, Vruwink and Otto (1987) found that quizzes do not significantly improve students' performance on examinations. Research in education shows that rewards can have a significant effect on students' performance. Gold et al. (1971) and Hales, Bain, and Rand (1971) found higher achievement in classes that give grades to quizzes than in classes that do not give grades to quizzes. Dunkin and Biddle (1974) and Peckham and Roe (1977) found that frequent assessments of what is taught during a school term improve the quality of learning, and result in higher students' achievement. This study examines students' performance end of the semester when students were given (a) mini-tests before lecture and discussion of the subject with a grade or without a grade, (b) mini-tests after lecture and discussion with a grade or without a grade, or (c) no mini-tests. Hypotheses It is expected that students would perform better, as measure by the final semester's grade, if mini-tests were given during the semester and if the grades for mini-tests were assigned and represented a large percentage of the total grade for the course. Also, it is expected that students' performance in mini-tests after lecture are better than their performance in mini-tests before lecture. In general, it is expected that students' performance improved if mini-tests were given during the semester and there was a grade assigned to them. Methodology Data Collection The students attended my sections either a morning or evening of an intermediate accounting course were subject of this study. The study was conducted for four semesters. Each semester two sections were included in the study. Number of students who participated in the study was comparable each semester. In total, there were 279 students who participated in the study. Students who repeated the course were not included in the study. To avoid any bias attributable to experimental groups that were not matched in terms of basic intelligence levels, the cumulative grade point average (GPA) of the students prior to the semester of the experimental was used to measure the quality of students attending each section. …" @default.
