- W898249170 abstract "The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes among adolescents toward people with psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. Mental illness is an increasing problem in society, not just among the average population but among the adolescents as well. A person who suffers from a mental illness is seen as different compared to the rest of society and therefor are being treated in a negative way. Young people who suffers from anxiety or depression has a disadvantage in life because of the stigmatization these disorders bring. Often the stigmatization of people with mental illnesses is due to ignorance or lack of knowledge of the disorders. It can also be affected by what is seen as normal on the basis of social norms in society. Therefor it’s easier to avoid the person who is seen as different as to challenge the social norms. The lack of knowledge leads to negative attitudes toward the mentally ill persons which in turn lead to stigmatization. To study the attitudes among adolescents we conducted a survey on a total of 104 students in six classes in their last year in high school. This survey consisted of 19 claims to which the students had to answer how their attitudes matched the claims. Using the theory of stigma (Goffman 1971, Link & Phelan 2001) we examined how the attitudes among the students could be explained. We also examined if there was a difference in attitudes between gender and also if attitudes were affected by having a member of the family or a friend suffering from a psychological disorder. We found that the majority of the students had positive attitudes toward persons with psychological disorders and that it was lack of knowledge that led to negative attitudes. We also found that there was a small difference in attitudes between genders. Finally we found that it overall didn’t make the attitudes more positive if having a member of the family or a friend who suffered from psychological disorders." @default.
