- W89875215 abstract "The ability to manage energy use in buildings requires a combination of technology and the application of engineering know-how to the building for use by its occupants. An example is given to show that all these factors must be applied to achieve the desired results for energy consumption. Assume three identical houses with three identical families: House A has a central air conditioning system with an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 12 Btu/Watt, House B has a central air conditioning system with an EER of 8 Btu/Watt, while House C has individual window air conditioning units with an EER of 4 Btu/Watt. Which house will use the least amount of energy for air conditioning. The answer to this problem would probably be that House C would use the least energy. Even though the EER of the window units is far lower than that of the central systems in Houses A and B, the units in each room would be used only during the periods when cooling was desired in each room. When cooling is desired in any one room in House A or B the entire house must be cooled and therefore more energy is consumed. (MCW)" @default.
