- W899601148 abstract "This chapter discusses the European communities of learning through the figures of Sambucus and Dudith, that is, in a necessarily haphazard way. The scholarly worlds of Sambucus and Dudith are just two examples of East Central European literary networks. Contrary to any of its arbitrary representations, the idea of the Republic of Letters was common to all humanists. In describing this imagined community, the chapter presents general examples related to the larger European scholarly community, and mentions a few decidedly East Central European cases. The idea of the Republic of Letters referred to an empowering fiction of a learned community, which functioned both as a source of authority and a source of identity. Keywords: Dudith; humanist networks; Republic of Letters; Sambucus" @default.
