The transition from the home to the larger society is a critical one especially in non-conformist families where many important values of society are questioned. The existence of a movement utilising a creative, non-coercive, libertarian approach to education within a society with many repressive and conformist values is an immense aid to these families. In this regard, the New Zealand Play Centre movement is worthy of examination because of (a) its grassroots origins, (b) its present day flexible methods of operation and locally autonomous administration and (c) its emphasis on enlarging both the educational experience of the pre-school child and of his parents. The success of Play Centres is especially interesting since it has evolved within an ostensibly democratic society with an educational system which is nonetheless authoritarian and uses corporal punishment." @default.
