- W89988956 abstract "In late Victorian Canada child welfare reformers perceived a growing number of neglected, dependent and delinquent boys caught in a net of rapid social change. These reformers sought to restore neglected wayward and delinquent youths to the ''proper'' condition of childhood through institutional forms and reforms that provided both and restraint. The Victoria Industrial school was one institution which tried to rehabilitate boys from poor or working class families. By examining both the ideology and experience of the school, this paper demonstrates that the initial visions of child rescue evaporated as the reform school degenerated into a custodial total institution. Under that regime, society's restless 'bad boys' were reduced, in spite of active resistance, to classed and pathologized subjects.A la fin de l’ere victorienne au Canada, des reformateurs preoccupes de la protection de l’enfant se sentaient particulierement concernes par le nombre grandissant de jeunes garcons negliges, dependants et delinquants pris dans le filet d’un rapide changement social. Ces reformateurs chercherent par differents moyens de remettre ces jeunes rebelles et ces jeunes delinquants dans le droit chemin grâce a une serie de reformes institutionnelles qui devaient pourvoir a la fois « delivrance » et « contrainte ». L’ecole industrielle de Victoria fut une des institutions qui essaya de rehabiliter ces garcons de familles defavorisees. En examinant a la fois l’ideologie et les pratiques de l’ecole, cet essai fait voir que les conceptions initiales en matiere d’aide aux enfants se sont volatilisees au fur et a mesure que l’etablissement degenerait en asile. Sous pareil regime et en depit de fortes resistances, les remuants ‘mauvais garcons’ de la societe etaient classes et definis en tant que sujets pathologiques." @default.
