- W90140571 abstract "Most lamellar compounds of graphite form readily without the need of a catalyst because of a large favorable free energy of formation. However, for some compounds the free energy change is small and the formation of such compounds may require a catalyst. The formation of the sodium–graphite lamellar compounds has been found by us to require a catalyst. It has been reported that the lamellar reactions of graphite with indium chloride or graphite with cadmium chloride are also catalyzed reactions. These reactions are known to require the presence of chlorine which is reported not to enter into the compound. However, our experiments show that the compounds of graphite with indium chloride or with cadmium chloride contain appreciable amounts of chlorine. The chlorine is completely ionized and in both the indium chloride and cadmium chloride compounds the chlorine is the only acceptor present. The reacted chlorine can be recovered as free chlorine by thermal decomposition of the compounds." @default.
