- W90143273 abstract "As the temperature is raised from 1200 to 2900 /sup 0/K, the work function and the spectral emissivity of the alloy ZrC--W 75 wt. % vary from 3.54 eV to 4.38 eV and from 0.6 to 0.43, respectively. The surfaces of samples of this composition have a slight contrast in work function up to 2400 /sup 0/K. The surface consists of a layer of zirconium and carbon adatoms on tungsten. Above 2400 /sup 0/K this layer is significantly thinner, it vanishes at 2900 /sup 0/K. A macroscopic redistribution of the metal component in the alloy occurs because of heterodiffusion and the difference in the evaporation rates of the components. In the temperature range 1200--2200 /sup 0/K, it is possible to vary phi by several tenths of an electron volt by changing the residual gas composition. Increasing the hydrogen pressure from 10/sup -9/ to 10/sup -2/ torr does not change the work function in the temperature range 1300--2450 /sup 0/K. The initial sticking factors of hydrogen and (CO+N/sub 2/) on the alloy at 300 and 1300 /sup 0/K are, respectively, (4 +- 2) x10/sup -3/ and 10/sup -5/ for hydrogen and (3 +- 2) x10/sup -2/ and (6 +- 3) x10/supmore » -3/ for (CO+N/sub 2/). These values are much lower for the alloy than for its components. The total adsorption coating by hydrogen, N/sub ad/, at 300 /sup 0/K is roughly equal to N/sub ad/(ZrC). At 300 /sup 0/K the rate of hydrogen dissolution in ZrC--W 75 wt. % is lower than in ZrC--Re 50 wt. %.« less" @default.
