- W9042945 abstract "Publisher Summary Tropical nations and their economies are changing extremely rapidly compared to most “developed” nations to the north. This industrialization of agriculture has allowed the growing populations to continue to be fed, and in some cases to become better fed and wealthier, as the yields of fossil-fuel-assisted agriculture tend to be considerably higher than those of traditional agriculture. The forces that have caused the tropics to become food sink rather than sources are a combination of human population growth, increased production of export crops, the remarkably successful industrialization of agriculture in the temperate countries—and hence the higher and cheaper yields there—and a general feeling among economists and decision makers that trade is good. A relatively few tropical countries or regions, including Puerto Rico, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, have been able to develop their own specialized manufacturing economies that have been successful in generating products competitive on the world market. The degree to which development has succeeded or failed is quite debatable and depends on the criteria one uses." @default.
