- W90688112 abstract "The marketing of Conrad's early novels capitalized on his initial career as a sailor, presenting him to the public as an author of exotic adventures told from within a predominantly male discourse of the sea. In 1904 T.P.'s Weekly produced an unsigned biography of Conrad which drew attention to the masculine flavour of the writer's former life and its compatibility with his current authorial intention. Previously he had endeavoured 'to turn his Conway boys into fine seamen' and now he 'wanted things always to be shipshape, in his writings as at sea.'1 The tone of male exclusivity associated with this enduring image was supported by the contexts in which the early works first appeared. Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim were presented in the sedate Blackwood's Magazine, a publication suffused with the character of the gendeman's club. Instalments of Nostromo were sandwiched in T.P.'s Weekly between advertisements for 'Three Nuns' Tobacco' and 'Citizen, the World's Best Boot for Men.' The popular impression of Conrad as a male-oriented author of nautical tales coincided with his reputation for awkwardness with women. Henry James once remarked on the Polish seaman's lack of 'savoir faire' in female society. When James's friend Lady Ottoline Morrell expressed a desire to meet Conrad he deterred her: 'But, dear Lady ... he has lived his life at sea ... he has never met civilized women.'2 The view of Conrad that persists makes him into the hearty sailor who preferred male camaraderie to the polite company of women.3 Drawn in by this reputa tion, critics have dismissed the serious possibility that a woman could have provided more than moral support in writing his novels.4" @default.
