- W9069785 abstract "Ten Triassic and two Cretaceous shallow cores were drilled by IKU in the Svalis Dome and Maud Basin areas in the Barents Sea in the period 1985-1987. The cores have been analyzed for vitrinite reflectance, hopane and sterane isomerisation reactions, Thermal Alteration Index (TAI), Apatite Fission Track (AFTA) and clay mineralogy, and are set into a regional and local structural framework to shed light on the Cenozoic uplift and erosion. Compaction consistent velocity function has also been determined from analysed stacking velocities. The results from the methods have been compared and they are in general accordance, indicating a total Cenozoic erosion in the Svalis Dome area of 1750-2050 m. Several of the methods agree on a maximum paleotemperature for the Cretaceous cores of 70 ± 5°C. The largest uncertainty in the erosion estimate is the paleo-geothermal gradient which based on present-day heat flow measurements is taken to be 37°C/km. The total Cenozoic erosion in the Svalis Dome is the result of at least two different causes. The first uplift phase, which probably initiated in mid Tertiary times, caused differential uplift which increases to a reported maximum on the Stappen High. The second phase was dominated by glacial erosion following the late Cenozoic climatic cooling. Glaciers can erode below sea level and submarine glacial erosion can explain the large water depths in the Barents Sea without a late subsidence phase. The extensive submarine glacial erosion also implies that the Plio-Pleistocene western Barents Sea wedge cannot be analyzed with respect to sea level fluctuations. Calculations based on an Airy isostatic model indicate that the submarine glacial erosion in the Svalis Dome was approximately 1 km." @default.
