- W907631713 abstract "thin line grease runs length Virginia Woolf's career, tracing vein antisemitic expression present in her work from her earliest apprentice sketches to her last fully completed novel, The Years. Woolf draws repeatedly on stock stereotype prevalent in her time and social class, associating Jews with oil or grease. That writer Woolf's subtlety and originality made use such tired cliches has long disconcerted critics. It is my aim to suggest that while such stereotyping is undoubtedly offensive, it is not entirely out keeping with Woolf's writing practice, and in fact it is associated with habit thought that in another form produces some her most original polemical work. Toward end her life, Woolf recorded in her diary difference between her husband Leonard and herself: L. sees people in mass. I singly(D5 332). This self-assessment rings true for anyone who has appreciated complexity and individuality many Woolf's characters. Her arguments about character-making in Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown, together with her conscientious efforts to see her characters whole in A Sketch Past, reveal writer deeply invested in capturing individual spark life animating her characters, whether fictional or biographical. The strength this impression is such that it can obscure fact that Woolf is simultaneously quite disposed toward identifying people by often making use thoroughly banal stereotyping in process. Thus her recollection Jack Hills in A Sketch Past draws heavily on Woolf's perception him as member the English country gentleman type (MOB 101). writes, for instance, He was very fond dogs (103; emphasis mine), of course delineating extent to which this trait is associated with his type. Because Hills belongs to privileged group that Woolf views as a desirable type (101), that of course and assumptions that it encompasses appear harmless, and do not figure in any tally offensiveness Virginia Woolf. The same rhetorical move, however, seems less innocent when applied to Jewish characters. We know we're in for trouble when, opening collection early sketches published in 2003 as Carlyle's House, we find one entitled Jews. This brief depiction wealthy Mrs. Loeb, Woolf's hostess for an apparently uncongenial dinner, drips with condescension and malice. That Woolf does not see her hostess singly, but rather as an exemplar type, is apparent in title. Mrs. Loeb, though rich woman, seems inveterately middle class: She might be behind counter (Carlyle's 14). Her skin, like her palate, is coarse; even her kindness is vulgar. …" @default.
